Kapangan boxing legend Rey Tam together with reigning One Championship strawweight world champion Joshua Pacio and 22 others were honored during the first Benguet C.A.R.E.S (Cordillera Athletic Recognition for Excellence in Sports) last week.
Tam, who fought Alexis Arguello in 1978 for the World Boxing Council world super featherweight champion, was named in the Hall of Fame while Pacio, who is set to defend his title in ONE sooner this year was named athlete of the year.
Provincial Sports Development Coordinator Dean Mark Monang said the awards program aims to recognize and reward the outstanding sporting achievement of homegrown talents who give honor and pride.
Monang added the awards program initiated by the provincial government is also aimed to encourage, motivate and further develop the athletes who have been representing the province of Benguet, the Cordillera region and the country to become better in their field of sport and as an individual.
He added that it will also recognize sports personalities who promote sport to make communities healthy places to live, learn, work and play.
Pacio, meanwhile lauded the provincial government for pushing thru with the awards.
“This awards ceremony will give athletes further motivation to do well in their competition,” the champion MMA fighter said.
Coach Mark Sangio was named Coach of the Year with Philippine Sports Commission’s Manuel Bitog as Executive of the Year.
Other awardees include Islay Erika Bomogao (Muay Thai) and Crisamuel Delfin (arnis) as Young Sports Achiever of the Year, Cristabel Martes (marathon) was given the Lifetime Achievement Award and Dr. Frael Aquino (football) as Sportsman of the Year. SCORE
